2023 Graduation Program Reminder
December 15, 2023

Effective July 1, 2023, all students working toward a B.C. Certificate of Graduation ("Dogwood Diploma"), in English or French, must successfully complete at least four credits in Indigenous-focused coursework. To implement the new Indigenous-focused graduation requirement, the ministry introduced a new 2023 graduation program code.

Graduation Requirements
The Indigenous-Focused Graduation Requirementhttps://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/indigenous-focused-graduation-requirements is effective for the 2023/24 school year for all current grade 10, 11 and 12 students. This requirement applies to students in B.C. public, independent, First Nations, and offshore schools. This requirement does not apply to students in the Adult Graduation Diploma Program. There is no change to the total number of credits required to graduate, which remains at 80.

Closure of 2018 Graduation Program
The ministry recognizes that some students may have started their grade 12 coursework in a previous school year, but still need time to complete or repeat coursework on the 2018 program due to exceptional circumstances. Schools will be responsible for working with students to identify these exceptional circumstances, and these students have until end of June 2024 to complete any remaining course or assessment requirements as part of the 2018 graduation program.

2023 Graduation Program and Data Submission
The ministry expects all current grade 10, 11 students and the majority of grade 12 students to be submitted under the 2023 program code. In the coming weeks, the ministry may reach out to individual schools for more information if the number of students being submitted under the 2018 program code appears to be too high.
